RJC 2008 AWARDS NIGHT
The 2008 Awards night was held at the Kalka Palms Hotel/Motel on
Monday, September 15 with special guest Michael Rodd, Australian
leading and Melbourne Cup jockey.
Michael was interviewed by compere Russell Leonard and recaptured
his win on Efficient in the 2007 Melbourne Cup to the enjoyment
of the crowd.
The Awards have been sponsored by the Kalka Hotel and B &
J Car Sales for over 10 years and thanks go to Max and Cathy Brown
and Justin Doyle for their continued support for the Awards Night
and racing overall.
The Horse of the Year was Danzamonkey, a four-year-old brown gelding
(Mapplerley’s Star- Please Madam (Prego IRE)) with five wins
and two seconds from eight starts.
Danzamonkey is owned by Marino Katsanevas and trained by Mark
Lehmann from Gladstone.
Trainer Mark Lehmann said Danzamonkey was one of the most consistent
horses he has trained and following the good year in Rockhampton
he will have a campaign in Brisbane and then a spell and get ready
for another crack at the Rockhampton Newmarket in 2009 following
up on his bad luck in the race this year.
Second place went to the Jamie McConachy-trained Lusting who had
five wins, one second and one third from eight starts.
Third place getter was Let It Hail, trained by Lyle Rowe, having
recorded four wins and three thirds from nine starts.
The Trainer of the Year was Garnett Taylor with 21 wins, 17 seconds
and 28 thirds from 101 starters. Garnett Taylor capped off a successful
year with the RJC Trainer of the Year Award and his biggest thrill
was to train Falverso who won the $115,000 2008 Capricorn Sales
2YO Classic.
Garnett said he was very pleased to win this prized award in his
second year in Rockhampton and thanked all his owners who supported
and stuck by him over the past years.
Jockey and Apprentice Jockey of the Year went to Luke Dillon with
25 wins, 13 seconds and 23 thirds from 200 rides. Luke Dillon has
capped off a most successful apprenticeship with his second RJC
Jockey of the Year Award, his previous being in 2006.
Lyle Rowe, master of Luke, said that it was an excellent achievement
to win two Jockey Premierships whilst he was still an apprentice.
This achievement was more special this year because he missed two
and a half months during the 2007/08 season.
The Kalka Hotel/Motel special Trainer’s Award (per cent
of winners to starters – minimum 20 starters) was shared by
trainers Kevin Hansen and Mark Lehmann. This award is sponsored
by Max Brown as an incentive achievement for trainers apart from
the overall Trainer of the Year Award.
The Strapper of the Year was awarded to Jessica Evans.
